•Almost 80% of the City’s higher paying administrative and managerial job positions are held by Whites. While Blacks, Latinos and Asians make up 37%, 16% and 4% respectively of the city’s workforce, they only account collectively for 19% of the total senior and executive staff of city agencies.

•The informal sector, which is characterized by exploitative working conditions and very few labor protections, is composed predominantly of people of color.

• An overwhelming 95% of domestic workers are people of color, 99% are foreign-born, and 93% are women.

Mabel Bejar Tango for Labor Rights

Hi there! Welcome to my Tango for Labor Rights website. Thanks for your support! I am taking tango lessons to help the continued work of the Human Rights Project. They do such amazing work in NYC. Some New Yorkers tend to think that human rights violations only happen in other countries or other US cities, but here in our own city some people, especially immigrants, people of color, women, children, and the elderly still live in very vulnerable situations. I am dancing to raise awareness of racial disparities in job benefits, unemployment, immigrant rights and exploitation, and labor disparities in NYC. Thanks for your generous support and for believing in this great cause!

I am being trained by the wonderful tango dancer Lexa Rosean, 2008 United States Argentine Tango Stage Champion to improve my performance. Please meet my wonderful partner Jagdish. My goal is to raise $500. You can support me by donating online  or you can donate by check payable to: The Urban Justice Center (please write “Mabel Bejar” in the memo section) and send to:
