•Women of color are 3 times more likely to die of pregnancy related causes.

•The citywide infant mortality has fallen to 5.9, according to the latest figures, released in 2006.

•However, a large racial disparity persists, with infant mortality rates among Blacks at 10.5 and among Puerto Ricans at 9.3.

•New York’s communities of color also have a high percentage of babies born with low birth weight.

•Many low-income women and women of color in NYC lack access to quality prenatal care in their own communities.

Maria Freytsis Tango for Reproductive Rights

Hi there! Welcome to my Tango for Reproductive Rights website. As a midwife, I see first hand how the healthcare crisis affects women and girls. In the United States, disparities in maternal health outcomes are great: women of color are 3 times more likely to die of pregnancy- related causes. In NYC, the choices for compassionate and technology- appropriate pregnancy and birth care have become very limited. As one of the founders of New Space for Women's Health, an NYC-based non- profit organization, I have worked to increase consumer awareness and improve access to high quality maternity care. I support the Human Rights Project's mission of protecting the rights of the most vulnerable members of our society. I'm dancing for the right to high quality reproductive health care for all women and girls in NYC.

Lexa Rosean is our wonderful instructor. Her unique teaching style make her a pleasure to work with. Please click here to meet my partner Arturo. To get involved, you may donate online and purchase tickets here. You can also donate by check payable to: The Urban Justice Center (please write “Maria Freytsis” in the memo section) and send attention to:
