• African Americans are over 5 times as likely, and Latino borrowers almost 4 times as likely, as White borrowers to receive high-cost home purchase loans. These sub-prime loans increase the likelihood of home foreclosure.

• 90% of people living in homeless shelters are Black and/or Latino.

• NYC is the most segregated major metropolitan area for Latinos in the US.

• Communities of color are disproportionately impacted by displacement and gentrification.

Roberto Cornejo Tango for the Right to Housing

Hi! Welcome to my Tango for Housing website. Thanks for your support! I am a teacher and a dancer of Peruvian folklore. But right now I am taking tango lessons to support the Human Rights Project. As a Latino immigrant I know how important it is to raise awareness of racial and economic disparities in NYC, especially regarding the right to affordable and accessible housing. Your support is fundamental to the work of our local human rights movement.

HRP is one of the few organizations that has really engaged diverse NYC communities and educated them about the need to implement international human rights standards in our city. They do incredible and unique work. Thanks for your invaluable support!

In order to learn the tango, I am being trained by the amazing tango dancer Lexa Rosean, 2008 United States Argentine Tango Stage Champion to improve my performance. My goal is to raise $500. Please meet my partner HaQuyen. To get involved, you can support me donating online or you can also donate by check payable to: The Urban Justice Center (please write “Roberto Cornejo” in the memo section) and send to:

Tatiana Bejar, Human Rights Project

See you all on September 16th at 6:30 at OK Harris Works of Art Gallery. Thanks for your support!
